  El Dr. Mellaart reunió y relacionó el material disponible sobre el período neolítico, crítico para el desarrollo cultural del hombre primitivo. Esta obra presenta una narracion clara y coherente del período presentado. El autor organizó su trabajo por regiones, resaltando los principales logros de varias culturas, haciendo comparasiones y analogías. Al mismo tiempo, sin embargo, nos da una visión cronológica del progreso del hombre en el período neolítico, desde la vida en tribus hasta llegar a una forma de vida en comunidad comparativamente avanzada. Hay, además, tablas cronológicas y sobre la agricultura, una lista de fechas C14 y catorce mapas especialmente preparados.
