Five species of fishes belong to four different families, Hoplias malabaricus, H. unitaeniatus (Erythrinidae), Apareiodon affinis bimaculatus (Characidae), were cytogentically compared. They were collected in Paraná river (Corrientes, region fo Argentina) placed southern antique Falls of Guaíra (Sete Quedas). It was realized a karyotype comparison with species of fishes from Mogi Guacú (SP) and Passa cinco (SP) rivers which belong to Alto Paraná basin.
The species Hoplias malabaricus from Alto Paraná presented variation in the diploid number between sexes, female with 2n=40 an male with 2n=40, probably due to mechanisms of multiples sexual chromosomes system of the X1X1X2X2/X1X2Y type. Despite it, the same species from Corrientes region-Argentina, presented a diploid number of 40 in both sexes and no detected evidences of sexual chromosomes.
We determined the presence in A. affinis from the same region, of diploid number of 54 and an structural polimorphism due to acrecentric chromosomes as a new fact for the family Parodontidae. The same species from Alto Paraná, on the other hand, showed male 2n=54 ZZ/ZW1 W2 type. These results indicate that probably antiga Sete Quedas falls was a geographic isolation barrier in the basin of Paraná river and species like H. malabaricus and A. affinis, from Alto Paraná could be endemic forms for this region.
The species H. unitaeniatus, L. obtusidens and A. bimaculatus showed a great degree of karyotypical similarities among samples from the two places of aur study. This fact suggests that, these species would represet continuos units through out Paraná basin or that instead the geographic isolation composed by Sete Qudas falls, the karyotype evolution would keep the consevation of the chromosomic macro-structure of these species.
With the new information obtained by the karyotype compared study of the species from the long Paraná basin, several problems raise to be solved for the ichthyofauna of this important hydrographic basin.
