The variations in seed ultrastructure of species of Cactaceae is related in this paper to their germination capacity. Rapid and high percentage of germination is associated with a thin testa and the presence of starch granules. It was also found that no germination occurred in the darkness but only after light exposure. This may be related to the activation of the phytochrome system.
