Notes about the incidence of Itaipú dam on the Argentine ichthyofauna of the Paraná River lower reaches

  The huge Itaipú dam recently established in Brazil croassing the Paraná River, defines at present, the real southern limit of the Superior Paraná. The primitive one, the Guayrá falls, are now covered by the resulting man-made lake. The biotic composition of the Superior Paraná is rather poor and different from the other streches, particularly in the integration of the ichthyofauna, having and important number of endemic species, as well as several introduced fishes, intra and extra Neotropical area.
At it is evident, in the new condition these fishes may traverse the dam by the turbines and disregarding the losse, they would spread out int he remaining trends of the river, particularly in the reach of the highest temperatures. It is difficult to estimate the ecological impact of this phenomenon, particularly in the fishery productivity of the water. The authors consider that it is very interesting and important to study the nature and real impact of Itaipú in this direction, and over this baseline, to promote multinational investigations in order to avoid important lateral side effects specially on fisheries
