Growth of Pimelodus clarias maculatus - Pisces, Pimelodidae - fingerlings under experimental conditions. Effect of photoperiod.
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effects of photoperiod regime on the growth and survival rates of yellow catfish - Pimelodus clarias maculatus - fingerlings maintained under laboratory conditions. The experiment was performed using180 1 PVC containers stocked with fish between 3,0 and 6,4 g body weight. Fish were reader under different photoperiod regimes: 24L: 0D ; 12L: 12D and 0L: 24D. The juveniles presented negative phototaxis and displayed a higher level of swining activity and growth in darkness. Fish maintained with a regime of 0L:24D reached the highest weight and length at the end of the trials. It is evident that rearing this species under long light periods, is highly stressful and the provision of cover seems to attenuate this stress, reduces the territoriality and results in a greater food intake and growth rates.
