Populations density, growth and production of the 'sábalo' (Prochilodus platensis) in the González pond (Corrientes, Argentina)
This paper deals with the assessment of the population density, growth and production of the 'sábalo' (Prochilodus platensis) in the González pond, a small, shallow and markedly eutrophic water body.
The 'sábalo' population (a typical migratory species) has been confined in this pond since the great flood of 1971/1972, during which the waters of the Riachuelo River invaded the pond.
The population density has been assessed by means of mark-recapture methods, following JOLLY`s (1965) model, in about 6.000 fishes in 1976.
The fishes grew fast during their first two years in the pond, but they never exceeded a mean length of 36 cm, while in other larger ponds in the same basin or in the Riachuelo River itself, 'sábalos' of more than 60 cm are not uncommon. According to such growth patterns, the yield was high, about 250 kg/ha/year in 1972/73, decreasing sharply during the following years.
The harvestable fish production represents only 0,2 - 0,3 % of the primary production, perhaps because of the specialized feeding habits of this mud-eater species.
